MARIO NEGRI INSTITUTE (IRFMN)

The Mario Negri Institute (IRFMN) is a private non-profit organization under D.P.R. (Decree of the Italian President of the Republic) no. 361 dated 5th April 1961 and is an organization entitled to perform research projects funded by the Italian Government under D.P.R. no. 382 dated 11th July 1980.

The scientific responsible of the beneficiary in this proposal is Dr. Emilio Benfenati, Head of the Laboratory for Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology. He is coordinating, or has coordinated in the past, 16 EC projects (including the LIFE projects ANTARES, CALEIDOS and PROSIL), and is participating, or has participated, to 25 other EC projects, many of them are on toxicity and environmental modelling. He has coordinated other international projects on (Q)SARs with USA and European partners.

On the basis of the LIFE projects CAESAR, ANTARES and CALEIDOS, a new software for regulatory purposes for REACH has been developed and updated: VEGA (http://www.vega-qsar.eu). The research activities of Emilio Benfenati includes: Computational chemistry; (Q)SAR; Toxicity prediction; Environmental toxicology; Environmental management; Environmental chemistry; Analysis of organic compounds by mass spectrometry; Metabolism studies and Risk assessment.

He has organised and co-organised some conferences/workshops/symposia on (Q)SAR and modelling, and environmental sciences, including the 2011 edition of the SETAC conference in Milan, with more than 2,300 participants. He is author or co-author of more than 350 papers in international journals and books.
